Cold Sunshine
The Pacific is a beast of an ocean, the west coast’s giant air conditioning unit. It’s our terroir - this blue monster makes our weather, it made the most of the soils in which vineyards are planted today, and it influences how we think and do things here on the edge of the western world.
Vineyards located near the Pacific, especially those at elevation, all share this phenomenon of cold sunshine. These are ideal conditions to achieve a balance of beautiful ripeness while retaining the high acid levels that make Chardonnay shine with
brightness, energy and precision.
Whale Song is one of the four brands under the Sanguis Collection. Helmed by visionary wine maker Matthias Pippig, Whale Song places focus on specific vineyard sites and the talented people who run them. Cultivating these relationships and collaborating to produce the highest quality fruit possible is the reason we do what we do.
The Whale Song project focuses on Chardonnay harvested from cool climate vineyards in three distinct areas: Sta. Rita Hills, Sonoma Coast, and the Columbia George, each area with its own lovely and unique expression of this varietal. From each area, we bottled two wines - an AVA designated composition that encompasses multiple sites, built for “high frequency” enjoyment, and a single vineyard, honed expression “for the ages” wine, designed for special occasions.
The “high frequency” bottles will age 7 - 10 years, and the “for the ages” bottles.. who knows, probably 10 - 20 (no joke!). However, all of these bottles will be delicious in their early years.
